Pack 117 Shingle Springs & Latrobe, CA
  General Den Information

Meetings

Den Meetings:  Den Meetings are attended by the den leader, assistant den leader, scouts and parents who would like to help out.  Activities during the meetings include games, craft projects and working on badge advancement achievements. Den Meetings are typically held once a week.

Several times during the year, the den will take a field trip on a Saturday or other convenient day. Examples of den trips include museums, tours of businesses and nature hikes.

One scout will be assigned the duty of Denner at each den meeting. The Denner is responsible for helping the leaders during the meeting and is responsible for providing the snack for the meeting.

Den meetings typically have an agenda as follows:

  • Opening: A short ceremony or song performed by the scouts.
  • Business Items: Review of upcoming meetings and events. Practice skit or demonstration for the pack meeting.
  • Activities: Crafts; badge and elective achievements,, stories, trick, puzzle, knots etc.
  • Closing: A short closing ceremony.

Scouts should wear their uniform to all scout meetings. The red vest can be worn at den meetings and pack meetings. A large adult T-Shirt can be worn over the uniform at den meetings to help keep the uniform clean while working on craft activities.

Pack Meetings: The Pack meets on the 3rd Monday of each month from August through May.  Exceptions to this rule are noted on the calendar page. This is a chance to recognize the scouts, their parents, and their leaders for achievements. The scouts sometimes talk about activities in their dens and show examples of crafts that they have worked on. Cub Scouting is family oriented so bring entire family to pack meetings and other events such as field trips and scout outings.

Special Events: Several times throughout the year, the pack has special events such as Sports Day, Swim Day and Pinewood Derby.

Den Dues

Den Dues: Den dues are used to purchase materials for the various crafts and activities that the scouts participate in during the den meetings. We may also ask for donations of recycled materials such as food cans, bottles, cardboard tubes and the like.

Achievements and Badges

Cub Scouts work on achievements (such as cooking, recycling and using tools) to earn advancement. Advancement is recognized by awarding badges to the scouts. Badges are earned in the following order:

  • Tigers (1st graders)
  • Wolf (2nd graders)
  • Bear (3rd graders)
  • Webelos 1 (4th graders)
  • Webelos 2 (5th graders)
  • Arrow of Light (5th graders)

Scouts work on achievements at den meetings but mostly at home with parents. Some of the achievements are best suited to be worked on at home. We have found that it is best to have the scouts work on achievements at home a little each week. This keeps the scout in touch with the program.  Our den has a "Den Doodle" which is a chart used to track advancement of the scouts. Achievements are also tracked in the scout's den book. When the scout completes the requirements for an achievement, the parent notes the completion by marking in the book. Please have the scout bring his book to each den meeting. Please note newly completed achievements in the back of the den book.

In addition to the primary den badges, Cub Scouts can earn Academics and Sports Belt Loops & Pins and Activity Patches. The belt loops and pins are for achievements in areas such as swimming and computers.

Cub Scouts receive activity patches for participation in various events. These patches are typically worn on a red vest that is worn over the uniform except during formal occasions.

Uniform Regulations

The official dress uniform is commonly referred to as the 'Class A' uniform but officially it is known as the "Field Uniform". There is also the availability of the "Activity Uniform", referred to as 'Class B' which consists of any scouting event t-shirt or den t-shirt. Field Uniforms are worn for Pack and Den meetings and other 'official' events, and the Activity Uniforms are worn for work projects, sporting activities, and other events in which the dress uniform might get damaged.
